Microsoft Surface Purchase Considerations

There are two types of Microsoft Surface tablets available for purchase–the Surface RT and the Surface Pro. If purchasing a Surface for use at UD, OET recommends that you purchase the Surface Pro based on comparisons between the two models. Weighing in at approximately 2 pounds, the Surface Pro runs Windows 8 Pro which will allow a Surface Pro to run all the applications that a regular Windows computer will run and also to connect to the OET domain or network.  The Surface RT runs a new version of the Windows operating system called Windows RT. Surface Pro can run the full Office suite, including Access; whereas, Surface RT runs Office Home and Student 2013 that includes Word 2013 RT, Excel 2013 RT, PowerPoint 2013 RT, and OneNote 2013.

The Surface Pro offers either 64GB or 128GB of storage. The Surface RT offers 32GB or 64GB versions.  Microsoft cautions that systems software takes up significant storage space so your storage capacity may be less.  To save on storage on the actual device, clients within CEHD who purchase the Surface Pro will be able to save their files to their OET network or “H” drive from on or off campus.

If you have any questions regarding your purchase or would like a recommendation, contact OET.
